The verdict on Saddam Hussein’s guilt or innocence gets handed down on Sunday. An easy prediction on this? Guilty. No great surprise or shock value there - the former dictator gets what he deserves, and rightly so.
“I hope the verdict will be what this man deserves for what he committed against the Iraqi people”
- Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki
What does it mean for Iraq, though? Riots, violence and even civil war has been predicted following a guilty verdict for Saddam. You don’t brainwash an entire generation of people without enjoying lingering supporters even when you are in the throes of death now, do you?
Hussein and seven other defendants will file into the courtroom in Baghdad on Sunday to receive their sentences from a five-judge panel.
Hussein’s verdict and sentence — which could be death by hanging for crimes against humanity — is expected to be announced last.
Open-ended curfew to be imposed in and around Baghdad on Sunday.
